Whether you’re wrapping up your spring break, or just starting it, there is plenty of great live music in Denver this weekend to help you celebrate. Here are just a few suggestions to help you narrow down the choices.

FRIDAY, MAR. 22

Local indie-folk act Paper Bird are headlining an album release show at The Oriental Theater, 4335 W. 44th Ave. in Denver. Also appearing are He’s My Brother She’s My Sister and Chimney Choir. If you’re a fan of local bands Regret Night or Be Brave, tonight is your last chance to see them for awhile. Regret Night are headlining a farewell show at Summit Music Hall, 1902 Blake St. in downtown Denver, with Be Brave also on the bill playing their final show. Word on the street (or on the Facebooks, take your pick) is that a slew of Colorado’s finest bands are tearing it up at SXSW in Austin this week. If, however, you’re like me and weren’t able to make it down to SXSW, there are still plenty of great shows going on this weekend in Denver. If you’re looking for opportunities to catch some awesome live music this St. Patty’s Day weekend, here are just a few suggestions.

FRIDAY, MAR. 15

Irish Celtic rockers The Young Dubliners have decided to celebrate St. Patty’s weekend with us here in Denver with a special show at the Soiled Dove Underground, 7401 E. 1st St. in Denver. My weekly Denver live music weekend picks are coming a little earlier this week, largely because some of the best shows are on the verge of selling out, and I want to make sure readers have a chance to pick up tickets if they want to go. Aren’t I thoughtful?

Denver’s own Churchill will be headlining at the Ogden Theatre, 935 E. Colfax in Denver. Opening the show are Ha Ha Tonka and Autumn Film. SATURDAY, MAR. 9

Illegal Pete’s will be sponsoring a “Starving Artists Showcase” at SXSW in Austin next week, featuring a great lineup of Colorado bands. In advance, they are hosting a special SXSW pre-party here in Denver at the Summit Music Hall, 1902 Blake Street in downtown Denver. The extended lineup features indie-rockers The Epilogues (just back from tour), along with A. Tom Collins, The Photo Atlas, You, Me & Apollo, Input & Broken, The Knew, Flashbulb Fires, Eldren, Fierce Bad Rabbit and Post Paradise. Tickets for all these great acts is $9.33 advance, $12 day of show (a great deal, either way), available from Soda Jerk Presents. Doors at 6:30 PM. This is an all-ages show!

EXTRA TIP: If you’re into Denver music and “secret shows” with news spread by word-of-mouth and social media, you might want to hang out at Lost Lake at 3602 E. Colfax this weekend. Word is that Nathaniel Rateliff’s old band Born In the Flood will be playing a set there Friday night, and Dan Craig’s new band NAVY will play there Saturday night. Just saying…

Denver Westword is hosting “Artopia”, an annual event celebrating local culture, art, food, film and music, with visual artists, performers and local bands showcased in five venues in the SoCo area. Local bands slated to perform for Artopia 2013 include Fierce Bad Rabbit, Chimney Choir, In the Whale, Kitty Crimes, Wheelchair Sports Camp, Hearts In Space, and many others. Tickets for the event are $25 advance, $25 day of the event, available through Westword. Ticket price offers access to all venues. Artopia 2013 begins at 7:00 PM, and is limited to ages 21+. Local dance/punk act The Photo Atlas are having a CD release show at the Hi-Dive, 7 S. Broadway in Denver, to celebrate their new CD Stuck In a Honeytrap.
